DIY(Do It Yourself)- Siddha/Ayurvedha

In Siddha and Ayurvedic traditions, getting the “liquid essence” of a plant is a fundamental process. Depending on the plant part (leaf, root, or bark) and whether it is fresh or dry, you would use one of three main methods at home.

The most direct “essence” is called Swarasam (fresh juice).

1. Swarasam (Fresh Juice Extraction)

This is used for fresh leaves (like Tulsi), ginger, or soft fruits. It is considered the most potent form.

 * The Process:

   * Wash the fresh plant parts thoroughly.

   * Crush or pound them using a mortar and pestle (avoid high-speed electric blenders if possible, as the heat can degrade the essence).

   * Place the crushed pulp in a clean muslin or cotton cloth.

   * Squeeze the cloth with force to wring out the liquid into a bowl.

 * Note: Swarasam should be consumed immediately, as it loses its medicinal property within a few hours.

2. Kudineer / Kasayam (Decoction)

If you are dealing with hard parts like dried roots, bark, or seeds, you cannot simply squeeze them. You must use heat to draw the essence out into water.

 * The “One-Fourth” Rule: 1.  Take 1 part of the herb and 8 parts of water (e.g., 10g herb in 80ml water).

   2.  Boil it on a low flame in a clay or stainless steel pot.

   3.  Continue boiling until the water reduces to 1/4th of its original volume (in this case, 20ml).

   4.  Filter and drink while warm.

3. Hima (Cold Infusion)

For very delicate plants or those with “cooling” properties (like Hibiscus or certain aromatic seeds), heat might destroy the essence.

 * The Process:

   * Crush the herb into a coarse paste.

   * Add it to cold or room-temperature water (usually a 1:6 ratio).

   * Let it sit overnight (or at least 6 hours).

   * Strain the liquid the next morning. (Courtesy: Google Gemini)
