“Asato mā sadgamaya
Tamaso mā jyotirgamaya
Mṛtyormā amṛtaṃ gamaya
Oṃ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ”
The mantra consists of three distinct movements:
1. Asatoma Sadgamaya (असतो मा सद्गमय)
• Asat: The “unreal,” “untruth,” or the “transient.” In science, this is like the visible world that is constantly changing, decaying, and dying.
• Sat: The “real,” “truth,” or “eternal.” This is the underlying fabric of existence (like the Dark Matter/Eshwar scaffolding we discussed) that remains constant.
• Meaning: “Lead me from the unreal to the real.”
2. Tamasoma Jyotirgamaya (तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय)
• Tamas: Darkness, ignorance, or the “Dharidhram” vibe (stagnation).
• Jyoti: Light, knowledge, or clarity.
• Meaning: “Lead me from darkness to light.” * The Paradox: Remember the verse you shared: Nalliravil nattam aadum eesane. To find the “Divine Light” (Jyoti), one must often travel through the “Deep Night” (Tamas) of the ego.
3. Mrityorma Amritamgamaya (मृत्योर्मा अमृतं गमय)
• Mrityu: Death or mortality. (Like the heel of Achilles or Krishna).
• Amritam: Immortality or the “Deathless” state.
• Meaning: “Lead me from death to immortality.”
